The Master in Linguistics study program was founded in 1993 with the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture No. 580/DIKTI/Kep/1993. Before established as an independent study program, the Master in Linguistics Study Program had existed since the early 1980s as a part of the Humanities Sciences Study Program managed by the Postgraduate Program at Gadjah Mada University. Since 2015 the Master in Linguistics Study Program has been under the management of the Department of Language and Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences as decreed by UGM Chancellor Decree No. 1681/P/SK/HT/2015.
